Wheelhouse Detroit was founded in 2008 by Kelli Kavanaugh and Karen Gage out of a shared love of biking and community development. The idea took root when the duo, already engaged in organizing bike events like the Tour de Troit, seized an opportunity presented by the Detroit Riverfront Conservancy during the revitalization process to open a bike rental business.
As longtime Detroiters, Kavanaugh and Gage brought their love for the city to life by not only contributing to the revitalization of the Detroit RiverWalk but also adding guided historical bike tours and more to celebrate the many communities and facets of Detroit.
Wheelhouse Detroit, originally established as a bike rental and service shop, has since evolved to offer a range of guided tours, embodying the spirit of history, exploration and community engagement in the heart of Motor City.
In 2015, Kelli took the reins, steering Wheelhouse towards new horizons while staying rooted in their commitment to cycling and Detroit's vibrant community.
THE STATS
More than just a logo
Beyond the playful name association of “Wheelhouse” with wheels, baseballs, and ships, our logo holds a deeper connection to the city we cherish: it’s actually a simple map! The circle represents the iconic Campus Martius, and the spokes are the city's main radial streets: Fort, Michigan, Grand River, Woodward, Gratiot, and Jefferson; the Detroit River is visible as a blue ribbon.
The logo also pays special tribute to our dear friend Colin Hubbell, who passed away in August of 2008. His influence lives on in its fabric, weaving together his spirit of exploration and camaraderie, as well as his enduring love for Detroit.
