Treehugger bike stories

Treehugger.com is one of the smartest sustainability websites out there, and we wanted to draw your attention to the site if you weren't already a regular reader. Appropriately, they write a lot about bikes because, in their own words, "Bicycles are, as we keep telling our readers ad nausem, the most efficient means of transport humankind has ever devised." Here are a few sample posts to get you started.

An exhaustive look at various methods of cargo carrying in Bicycle Cargo. Chapter 1. We don't know about you, but we love challenging the limits of our bikes. How much can my rack/basket/trailer hold? Here are examples of some folks pushing the limits.

Sometimes things aren't black and white. A cyclist's death from being hit by a car recently caused some stir in Toronto. It seems that both parties are at least somewhat at fault, which only muddies an already-complicated situation. Read about it here.

Kelli met Treehugger founder Alex Steffan many years back when he visited Detroit, and K&K heard him speak in Chicago just a couple of years ago. What we love about the site (and the book they published) is that it a meld of nerdy activism and pragmatic insight. Make it a regular interweb destination.

Detroit Agriculture Network Tour

On August 5, Kelli, Alex and Raymond rode with the Detroit Agriculture Network's annual urban farming/community garden tour as sweepers. We had a really great time and, as always, were inspired by the good work of DAN and its partners. Here are some pics that Alex snapped.

Green Tea Ride 08-28-08

Come celebrate & promote biking in the city! Join us for the August "Green Tea" on Thursday, August 28 at 4:30 p.m. at the Wheelhouse.

Meet other folks who bike, share what you think would help facilitate biking in the city, connect with bike organizations, learn about biking opportunities along the Riverfront and the Dequindre Cut, find out about the Detroit non-motorized plan and how you can support it, share your favorite routes and find a commuting partner!

There will be a short ride to Eastern Market for refreshments.

Green Teas are a series of events that aim to expand Detroit's conversation about green issues and are a chance to connect with the larger "Detroit Gets Green " movement.

We're in! Co-op America's National Green Pages

After a quite-rigorous screening process, we're thrilled to announce that we've been granted admission into Co-op America's National Green Pages, the country's only directory of screened and approved green businesses.

We're really excited our application was approved -- we are just the third business in Detroit and the second bike shop in the country to be listed in the National Green Pages. Read more about our commitment to sustainability here.

Tube recycling

We are preparing to send in our first shipment of tubes to Alchemy Goods, so if you have old tubes laying around at home, feel free to drop them off at the shop. AG makes cool stuff out of the tubes, including messenger bags and wallets. And they incorporate valves into their designs as zipper pulls.
